What is Shiatsu and Asian Bodywork Therapy?

Shiatsu, which means finger pressure in Japanese, is an ancient healing art. It dates back to the third century in China. It is also know as acupressure. Fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, or knees are used to apply pressure to points and energy channels of the body, called meridians, to balance the flow of energy or Qi (pronounced chee or key) and stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Stretching is also a major aspect of shiatsu.

Shiatsu is a part of a larger field , referred to as Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT). ABT is any form of therapeutic bodywork with its theoretical roots in Chinese Medicine. Amma, acupressure, Jin Shin Do, medical qigong, and tuina are examples. (For more information please see www.aobta.org)

How does it work?

These therapies access the energy or Qi of the body through specific points on the meridian pathways, the same points and pathways used in acupuncture, to influence health and well being. Smooth flow of Qi in the body is viewed as a sign of health. When Qi flows, meridians are balanced, and the tissues, nerves, muscles, and bones respond in kind.
